Find brownfield sites near a postcode

Every English council keeps a statutory register of previously developed land it considers suitable for residential development. This searches the national compilation of those registers on planning.data.gov.uk — the councils’ own entries, with size, their dwelling estimate where recorded, and permission status.

Registers are updated by councils periodically, so an entry’s status may have moved on since its register date — each card is dated, and the council’s register is definitive. Entries councils have removed are excluded. Finding a site here is a starting point, not an assessment: run the free check on it, and for a site you are serious about, the full report is the next step. Pins mark each entry’s recorded point, not the site’s extent.
